TONSILLITIS  

WHAT ARE TONSILS?

Tonsils are a part of our immune system. They are areas of special tissue called lymphoid tissue which protect body against infections.

WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED?

Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue located on either side of throat.
They are found in 3 pairs in throat at different places.
They help in fighting off throat and upper respiratory tract infections.

Infections of Tonsils are called tonsillitis .

CAUSES OF TONSILLITIS

Tonsillitis is caused in individuals who have a low immune system and thereby attract bacteria or virus. Streptococcus haemolyticus is the most common bacterium associated with tonsillitis.
Malnourished children are prone to acquire tonsillitis repeatedly as they have lower immunity than well-fed children.

TYPES OF TONSILLITIS:

Acute: It is often caused by a sudden lowering of immune system of body e.g. exposure to cold, errors in diet etc, which attract bacteria and virus and lead to acute inflammation of tonsils

Chronic : Here there is chronic deficiency in immune system and leads to repeated attacks of tonsillitis.

Clinical features:

  • Tonsillitis commonly affects school going children.
  • The disease usually begins with fever and possibly chills especially in children.
  • Sore throat, the patient complains of a persistent pain in throat. The pain may radiate to ear on swallowing

Opening the mouth is difficult and painful. There is difficulty in swallowing. The child may refuse to eat anything due to local pain.

Patient may also complain of headache and general body aches and weakness.

What are the SYMPTOMS of Tonsillitis?

  • Tongue is coated and there is foul mouth odor
  • There may be swelling and tenderness of neck glands.
  • Both tonsils and surrounding area are deep red and swollen. Later whitish spots may form on tonsils.
HOMEOPATHIC APPROACH

Tonsillitis, Adenoiditis, respiratory allergies etc. are all due to low immune status of the child. Weak resistance of the child makes him prone to infections. Homeopathy can do wonders by enhancing the immunity level and make him more resistant to morbific agents.
